Koh Mook (Koh Muk)

The island of Koh Mook is located in the Andaman Sea in front of Trang and is about 4 km from the mainland. It belongs to the Had Chao Mai Marine National Park. The island is about 5.5 km ² area very small and very quiet: you will find beautiful beaches and a small village. Most of the approximately 1,000 islanders are Muslim and live mainly from fishing and small shops or restaurants in the village of Baan Koh Mook. The island is still very little developed, spread over the beaches there are a few resorts and bungalows. The main attractions of Koh Mook include the Morakot Cave on the west coast (a cave with a collapsed ceiling, through which the sun's rays color the sea in a magical emerald glow) and Silvalai Beach. At the latter one finds a large sandbank, which falls flat into the sea. Similarly, surrounding islands such as Koh Kradan, Koh Ngai (Koh Hai) and Koh Sukorn can be reached in a few minutes by boat.

Koh Mook is the perfect island for sun worshipers and peace seekers. Nightlife and bars are in vain. There are a few shops, including. a small mom and pop shop with groceries and drinks and also 2 clothes / souvenir shops.

There is no bank, ATM or bureau de change on the island! That's why you have to stock up on enough cash before.

Hotel recommendations

Koh Mook offers various accommodation along its beaches and in the village of Baan Koh Mook, as well as a small hostel near the Haad Farang (Charlie) Beach. The most luxurious hotel is located on the same named Silvalai Beach and costs around 120 - 150, - € / night per room during the high season. We lived just outside the village of Baan Koh Mook in the Lucky Bungalow. The Lucky Bungalow consists of 5 small bungalows with terrace and a small garden. We felt very comfortable in the small area. Likewise, the bungalows include a small restaurant (The Ku) a few minutes walk from the complex. There are several classic Thai dishes and barbecue evenings.

getting there

Koh Mook does not have its own airport. The nearest airports are in Trang, Krabi and Phuket. Trang Airport is approximately 7 km outside Trang city center. Since 2016, the three Thai companies Nok Air, Thai Lion Air and Thai AirAsia have combined Don Muang Airport in Bangkok with Trang Airport. Although Krabi Airport is an international airport, from Germany you can only travel via the metropolitan airport in Bangkok. Due to its proximity to Koh Lanta, Koh Mook can be easily reached by a passenger ferry from Baan Saladan Pier (Koh Lanta).

From Trang to Koh Mook:
Trang has several small piers:
Hat Yao Pier - long tail at 13.00, about 900 THB
Kuan Tung Ku Pier - Longtails from 250 THB, speedboat from 500 THB
Pak Meng Pier - private speedboat
Small long-tail boats, speed boats and larger long-tail transport boats (supply boats) operate several times daily from these piers.

Transfer from Krabi (Krabi Town) to Koh Mook:
Krabi Airport is located approximately 8 km northeast of the center of the provincial capital Krabi. The most convenient option for tourists is the taxi / minivan to get from Krabi or Krabi Town airport. From Krabi Town daily a minivan runs to Trang. The transfer price from Krabi Town (minivan including ferry tickets) is around 1,000 - 1,250 THB.

Transfer from Phuket to Koh Mook:
From Phuket Airport it goes directly by minibus and ferry. The price is between 1,600 - 2,200 THB per person. The ferry leaves from Phuket (Rassada Pier) twice a day (8.30 am and 9.00 am)

Arrival from Bangkok:

  • The arrival from Bangkok by plane is possible to Trang, Krabi or Phuket. The companies Bangkok Airways and other local airlines (PB Air, Thai AirAsia, NokAir, Thai Airways and others) serve these routes. From the airport you can take a taxi or mini bus + ferry to Trang and / or Koh Mook
  • From Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal, there are daily buses to Trang. The fare is between 660 and 1030 baht. Depending on traffic, the journey takes between 11 and 13 hours. Due to the air conditioning it gets pretty cold in the buses. It is best to take a warm sweater or jacket with you for the ride. There are 3 different buses at the Southern Bus Terminal in Bangkok:
  1. Aircon buses (blue / Express buses from Sappaisal, No. 988 - 3) with approx. 40 seats (660 THB = approx. 16.- EUR)
  2. VIP buses (inscription "VIP Bus 989-2" from Sappaisal) with approx. 24 seats (1,030 THB = approx. 25.- EUR)
  3. VIP buses (inscription "VIP Bus 988-1" by Sri Suthep) with approx. 24 seats (780 THB = approx. 19.- EUR)
  • Krabi, Phuket and Koh Lanta are not connected to Thailand's rail network. But you can go by train to Trang. The journey from Bangkok to Trang is about 16.5 hours. From Hat Yao Pier you can easily reach Koh Mook by boat.

Arrival from Koh Samui / Koh Phangan / Koh Tao:
Here it is advisable to book a ticket in one of the small travel agencies that are found everywhere in the tourist centers. The travel price includes a pick-up service directly from the hotel. The mini bus continues to the pier and from there by boat / ferry to Surat Thani. From Surat Thani it is 5 hours by bus and ferry to Trang. From Trang you can take a boat to Koh Mook.

Arrival from mainland Tailand (for example Khao Lak, Takua Pa, Ranong):
Again, you can book the pick-up service directly from the hotel again. With the mini bus it goes on to the respective bus station and from there with a larger bus to the "bus station" in Phuket Town or Phuket Airport and from there further in the direction of Trang. However, the trip takes between 12 and 15 hours. From Trang, you can easily reach Koh Mook by boat.

Arrival from mainland Tailand (for example Pattaya, Hua Hin):
From here it is best to book a plane ticket to Trang, Krabi or Phuket (via Bangkok). Again, you can book a pick-up service directly from the hotel. The (mini) bus continues to the "Bus Station" in Don Muang Airport in Bangkok and from there to Trang by plane.

The bus routes between Phuket - Trang, Phuket - Krabi and Phuket - Khao Lak are served by public buses. Here the fare is much cheaper, but is stopped at many stops.

Boat connections - important info

Generally applies to all boat connections that time information is without guarantee. Smaller islands are often approached only in the main season (November - May), since the sea can have high waves, especially in the rainy season. Even during the main season, individual connections may u.U. due to weather conditions.

As far as the choice of speed boat or long tail boat is concerned, everyone has to make that decision themselves. Most of the time difference is only 15 minutes. We prefer the longtail variant, as the crossings are much calmer and more comfortable. Also, much less gas is consumed, clearly a plus for our environment. And by the way, the rides in Longtail are on average more than half cheaper!
